Jesus returns soon to judge evildoers and reward believers.

Important Note
In regard to Biblical prophecy many times God states what will happen but does not explain how or when. Thus even wise, mature Christians may differ on interpreting less explicit details while still agreeing on the key point. In end times prophecy the key point is that Jesus will return as king to conquer, judge and finalize his kingdom. There are four or five popular views on how the Bible explains this taking place. It is beyond the scope of this brief timeline to explain those views. They mostly differ on the identity or nature of the Antichrist, the timing of Jesus' return (the second coming), when believers will be either be raptured or reunited with Jesus, and the literal or symbolic nature of Jesus' one thousand year reign on this earth (the millennium).

From my bible study so far I lean toward the premillennialist view which basically states that Jesus will physically return before establishing a literal 1,000 year reign on earth and that believers will be caught up to meet the Lord (raptured) at the opening of the seventh seal and immediately preceding the Day of the Lord. However, I still have some questions. I recognize and respect that some believers feel the rapture could occur before the opening of the first seal, after the fourth seal or at the end of the Great Tribulation. Yet other believers feel that several of the end times prophecies listed below are already fulfilled and the millennium kingdom along with other eschatological descriptions are figurative rather than literal. In any case, all believe the Bible is clear that Jesus will return at some point. When he does he will reward believers and punish unbelievers. It is worthwhile to study the end times yourself and allow the Holy Spirit to teach you. Be encouraged that believers place their confidence in Christ and not their circumstances. No matter what difficulties we face now or however much of the end times turmoil we experience, do not lose heart. God is in control. He goes before us and sustains us (Jude 1:24-25). His grace is sufficient. His power is made perfect in our weakness (2 Cor 12:9-10). His love endures forever (Psa 136).

Following are many of the events that the Bible describes taking place in relation to Jesus' return. I humbly acknowledge that they may happen differently than listed here. I continue to seek a clearer understanding as the Holy Spirit illuminates his truth. More important than timing is trusting. No matter how or when God brings this present age to an end, we have the blessed opportunity each day to joyfully praise, trust, and obey Jesus. He advises us to be aware and alert of these events. He encourages us to await eagerly for his return. He calls and empowers us to actively love and glorify God by following him in seeking and saving the lost.

  1. Satan is cast down out of Heaven to earth and embodies the Antichrist.
    • This happens at the midpoint of the seven-year Tribulation.
    • The Antichrist sets up his capital in Jerusalem.
    • The Antichrist reveals himself as the man of sin (son of perdition) He claims to be "God" and sets up an abomination that desolates the temple.
    • This ushers in the Great Tribulation also called the time of Jacob's trouble.
  2. The Antichrist persecutes believers during the Great Tribulation.
    • Saints are instructed to flee to the mountains.
    • Israel flees to the desert for 1260 days.
    • The Beast (Antichrist) and False Prophet begin persecutions and blasphemy.
    • God gives authority to the Beast to act for 3.5 years.
    • Two witnesses (one like Elijah) will prophesy for 1260 days.
    • Saints persecuted and killed.

Cosmic disturbances, the rapture, and other events precede the wrath of God.
  1. Fifth seal is opened.
    • Jesus, the Lamb, opens the fifth seal revealing believers under the altar who were martyred for their faithful testimony.
  2. The intensity of the suffering during this time is unlike any other in history. God cuts it short or else no one would survive.
  3. Sixth seal is opened.
    • Jesus, the Lamb, opens the sixth seal revealing cosmic disturbance.
    • This immediately precedes the Day of the Lord.
  4. Jesus seen in the sky along with a trumpet call.
  5. Believers from every nation (the church) are raptured.
    • Note: As stated earlier the rapture timing like some other end time events is interpreted differently. Some people believe the rapture will occur before the tribulation, others during the tribulation, and others even after the tribulation.
    • Believers will not suffer God's wrath. However as a Christians live as salt and light in a fallen and hostile world, Jesus said we will face hatred and tribulation.
    • At harvest time (the end of this age) believers and unbelievers will be separated.
    • Jesus taught that the rapture will occur the same day the Day of the Lord begins thus we should pay attention to the signs of the times.
    • Just as each major event of Jesus Christ's, first coming aligned with the Spring Feasts most likely his second coming will align with the three Fall Feasts. The Feast of Trumpets (Rosh Hashanah) coincides with the rapture.
    • The souls of believers who have died are already with Christ. For to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. They will be with Christ when he raptures the church. Their bodies will rise first. Then those that are alive will rise. All will be instantly changed into glorified bodies as they join Jesus in the air.
  6. God places a seal of protection on 144,000 Jews representing twelve tribes of Israel.
  7. A multitude of saints (from the great tribulation) appear in heaven.
  8. Christ judges believers and bestows them with crowns. (Timing unclear)

    • Crown of Righteousness
    • Crown of Life
    • Crown of Rejoicing
    • Crown of Glory
  9. People mourn and flee in fear to try and escape God's pending wrath.

God pours out his wrath to judge evil.
  1. There is silence in heaven.
    • Occurs at the start of the Day of the Lord.
    • Occurs with the opening of the seventh seal.
  2. The seventh seal is opened ushering in the Day of the Lord.
    • It will come like a thief in the night.

    • It's a time of darkness in the heavens.
    • It's a time of fire from the Lord.
    • It's a time of destruction.
    • It's a time of divine wrath and fierce anger.
    • It's a time when God will punish the world for evil.
    • It's a time when God will direct his fury and indignation against all nations.
    • It's a time when God will avenge.
  3. God judges the sin of humankind and Satan with seven trumpets.
    • First trumpet: Hail and fire burn one third of the earth, one third of the trees and all of the green grass.
    • Second trumpet: A blazing mountain hits the sea. One third of the sea turns to blood. One third of sea creatures die and one third of ships are destroyed.
    • Third trumpet: A blazing star falls on a third of the rivers and on springs of water. A third of the water turns bitter causing death to those who drink it.
    • Fourth trumpet: A third of the sun, moon and stars turn dark.
    • Fifth trumpet: A fallen star opens the bottomless pit releasing smoke and stinging locusts that torment people for five months. The smoke darkens the sun and sky. This is the first of three woes.
    • Sixth trumpet: The Euphrates river dries up to make way for the kings from the east. Four demonic angels bound at the Euphrates river are released along with 200 million mounted troops (most likely demonic). One third of mankind is killed by fire, smoke, and sulfur coming from the troops. Those that lived still did not repent. This is the second of three woes.
    • Seventh trumpet: Heaven rejoices at the beginning of the culmination of God's righteous judgment and fulfillment of his perfect will. God's temple in heaven is opened revealing the ark of his covenant. Lightning, rumblings, thunder, an earthquake and hail occur. This starts the third and final woe.
  4. Seventh trumpet leads to seven intense bowl judgments.
    • First bowl: Ugly and painful sores break out on those who took the mark of the beast.
    • Second bowl: Sea turns to blood and everything living creature in the sea dies.
    • Third bowl: Rivers and springs turn to blood in judgment of the blood of God's saints and prophets that was shed.
    • Fourth bowl: The sun scorches people. People curse God, but refuse to repent.
    • Fifth bowl: People curse God, but refuse to repent.
    • Sixth bowl: Three evil spirits perform miraculous signs and gather kings from around the world for battle in Armageddon.
    • The Two Witnesses are killed by the Beast, but God resurrects them.
    • The Beast, False Prophet, and Satan gather nations in Armageddon to fight God.
    • Seventh and final bowl: An unparalleled earthquake, noises, thundering and lightning and a heavy hailstorm. Cities are leveled. Mountains and islands disappear. God avenges and destroys Babylon. People continue to curse God. Heaven rejoices in God's righteous judgment.
  5. Jesus returns to earth in glory to defeat his enemies.
    • Angels and saints accompany him.
    • Jesus returns at the Mount of Olives and soon thereafter conquers opposing nations.
    • Israel will mourn when they realize Jesus is their Messiah. All who call on the name of the Lord will be saved.
    • Just as each major event of Jesus Christ's first coming aligned with the Spring Feasts, most likely his second coming will align with the three Fall Feasts. The Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) coincides with Jesus' return and Israel's repentance and salvation.
    • The Beast and False Prophet are thrown into the lake of fire.

God consummates his kingdom.

Jesus judges the people remaining on earth.
  1. The “sheep” are accepted for an active faith.
    • The judgment is based not on good works, but a response to Jesus as evidenced by merciful or favorable treatment of a believer during the tribulation. Because of this demonstration of faith, Jesus the King, allows the person to enter his millennial reign on earth. At this point these people probably don't have a personal, saving relationship with Christ but they are given passage into his millennial reign and hopefully they will choose to trust him as Savior at some point before the millennium is over.
  2. The “goats” are cast out for not responding in faith.
    • The “goats” did not respond to Jesus as shown by their treatment of believers. They are sentenced to eternal punishment like the “weeds” who were judged earlier.

The Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkot) coincides with Jesus' dwelling with his people in his kingdom celebrating God's goodness and provision.
  2. Followers of Jesus will reign with him.
  3. Satan is bound and thrown in the bottomless pit for 1,000 years.
